What do you first think about when you hear the term ‘internship’? Most people would associate interns with the ones getting coffee and doing simple tasks that could be automated as well. At Crystalloids, interns are not the ones who could be automated; they do it themselves using Machine Learning.
Guillaume, Amaury and Dorian have been playing the same role as other co-workers and have been helping to find solutions for real business problems. Let us introduce the three French software developers and their projects.
Amaury Astier
Amaury’s Internship Role: Software Developer Timeframe: August - November 2018 Project: Giving our own-built application InsightOS a new look and making it work more efficiently, Amaury migrated the whole program from one version to another.
What did you learn during your Computer Science internship?
“In general, I have learned how to find people to trust. It was hard for me at times to socialize coming out of my comfort zone in France. Other than that, I have mainly learned how to work in a team and carry out tasks with others without breaking any code. Professionally I achieved two things; I created a website based on material design, so the user understands the functionality of a button before clicking it. I really enjoyed this part of my internship. Secondly, I worked with Dart, which is basically like JavaScript powered by Google.”
What was your favourite part of the internship at Crystalloids?
“During my internship, I worked on a real business project that customers can make use of. I learned a lot, especially from my supervisor, Beata, who is a great software developer. It's exciting to be able to continue working at Crystalloids and improve my skills and knowledge even further.”
Guillaume Pons
Guillaume’s Internship Role: Software Developer Timeframe: March-August 2019 Project: For our customer, Guillaume and Dorian created a Machine Learning model to have a full view of the unmapped data in our application InsightOS. Therefore, a whole new page on InsightOS was created by the two.
What did you learn during your Computer Science internship?
“I have learned a lot about Machine Learning and Tensorflow, in particular. Therefore, I was able to pass the Serverless ML with Tensorflow on Google Cloud Platform course easily. But the biggest lesson for me was to just ask for help whenever I didn’t know something. Generally, it was a great international experience working at a company like Crystalloids.”
What was your favourite part of the internship at Crystalloids?
“I was pleasantly surprised by the company and its flat hierarchy. Typically the relation to your manager is a bit distant, but here you can always come to Richard (our CEO) without a problem. When we had the first big struggles with Tensorflow, Richard calmed us down. He took the pressure off our shoulders by saying that we would be here to learn and that this was a big part of the computer science internship. Also, where most companies are searching for students without having to pay the full wage, Crystalloids was not one of them.“
Dorian Sindji
Timeframe: March-August 2019 Role: Software Developer Project: For our customer, Guillaume and Dorian created a Machine Learning model to have a full view of the unmapped data in our application InsightOS. Therefore, a whole new page on InsightOS was created by the two.
What did you learn during your Computer Science internship?
“During my internship, I have learned a lot about Machine Learning and how to work in a team on a real-life business project. It gave me insights into work practices, too. Furthermore, I was able to improve my English skills, which was my biggest concern before coming to Crystalloids. Working in a company taught me that communication is the most important part of professional life. That’s why I further want to improve my English.”
What was your favourite part of the internship at Crystalloids?
“I don’t have a particular part that I liked best about my computer science internship. Just to have had the opportunity to work here and to come to the office every day was what I am most grateful for.”
We, at Crystalloids, are excited for having discovered our three computer science interns. They have worked on and improved real business projects. Therefore, we want to say thank you and wish them all the best for the future.
